“It has been amazing,” says Dr. Louis Patek about working alongside his partner, Dr. Ying-Hui Fu. “She is an amazing scientist whose work I admired long before I met her. Her strengths are different than mine and over the course of our career together, we’ve done much more together than the sum of what we would have done alone. I feel incredibly blessed.”⠀
.⠀
Both neuroscientists at UCSF, the couple studies the science of sleep, including making the discovery of a "short-sleep gene" that allows some people to get by with less sleep than others.⠀
.⠀
Dr. Fu didn’t hesitate to reciprocate the positive feelings. “It has been an extremely rewarding journey. Working closely with your partner naturally brings out some difficulties, yet what we can do together makes all the challenges easy to overcome. I am very grateful for all the things that we have been able to accomplish as a team. I could not have hoped for a better partner for my scientific adventure.”⠀

You know what they say… “The couple that re搜索es together, stays together.” Happy Valentine’s Day from our #UCSFFamily to yours. ♥⠀

Welcome to campus, Dr. Burke Harris!

California’s first Surgeon General Dr. Nadine Burke Harris and UCSF’s Dr. Edward Machtinger chatted about training medical providers to screen patients in the Medicaid system for childhood trauma. Dr. Burke Harris is leading the state’s effort to implement screening for childhood trauma.

.⠀
By growing brain-like tissue in the lab, scientists hope to understand early brain development. Some have even worried whether these cerebral organoid models could become so close to human brain tissue that they cross ethical boundaries. But a new side-by-side comparison with real developing brain tissue reveals that organoids fail to develop even the rudimentary organization of the human brain. Until these problems are resolved, claims that organoids can model human brain diseases or brain functions should be taken with a grain of salt.⠀

Some people may see addressing climate change as a moral imperative. But as health care professionals, it’s much more tangible than that. The moral imperative to engage with the climate crisis grows out of the consequences we see for our patients.”⠀

I hope that [in 2050] UCSF will be able to look back and say that we were responsive to the needs of the most underserved and under-resourced communities, and that we were a catalyst for changing the corporate culture of the Bay Area. I hope we can say that we increased health equity so all residents of the Bay Area could live healthy, vibrant lives."⠀
